Welcome to the Isca School of English, the best family-run English Language School in the UK – from Sarah, the Isca School Principal

Isca is a family-run English Language school. It was founded by my grandfather in 1966 and now that my father has retired (almost), I am the third generation of the Tomlinson family to lead the school.

When I was a teenager, my parents sent me to schools in France and Spain. I remember the care they took in selecting the right schools for me and the wonderful experiences I had as a result. I want your child to feel the same way about their course here.

At the Isca School, we want all our students to feel safe, happy and to learn as much English as possible. Your child will work hard and also have fun, enjoying lessons,  activities, sports and excursions with international friends.

When I choose the English home where your son or daughter will stay, I visit every home myself because this is such an important part of their experience here. I look for friendly, caring people offer our students a warm welcome into their home.

We also choose our teachers and Director of Studies very carefully.  We look for well qualified, stimulating and professional educators.  We have a core of teachers who return to work with us each summer.  They provide continuity and work together with teachers who are new to Isca to maintain our ‘work hard and have fun’ ethos.

I am assisted by my husband Javi and my father, by our welfare secretary, Director of studies, teachers, our social staff and activity leaders. There is always someone here to help you and your child.

If you have any questions about our courses or our school, please email me.

I hope that you will choose our school for your child and look forward to welcoming them to Isca.

With very best wishes,

Sarah Tomlinson

Our Mission Statement

  • We aim to activate students’ knowledge of English and to present and practice new linguistic structures.
  • We aim to provide students with a balance of skills, grammar and vocabulary development throughout their course.
  • We aim to enable students to make the most of being in a British environment, of living in a British home and of visiting Exeter and the South west of England.
  • We aim to achieve all of the above through a combination of engaging and dynamic classroom activities, dedicated and personalized teaching and multi-lingual classes.
